I, too, was uncertain about my future. I always tell those students to do what I did - work hard to graduate then take one day at a time. I tried to go to college right out of high school, it wasn’t for me at the time. Instead, I found a really great job, got married, and had kids. I always tell them that no matter how long they take to decide what they want to do, it is never ever too late to decide they want to do something else. It is never too late to decide what their dreams are and go after them. I went back to college at age 30 and I started my public school teaching at age 38.
Probably that there are some decisions that they are stuck with for life... but a lot they aren't.
Many people change jobs and careers two or three times (or more). If they are anxious about making the "wrong" choice for their future, it isn't a life sentence.
To live it one moment at a time. A lot of things are uncertain but in order to move forward, they have to be present to what the moment calls from them.
Great question, it’s making me think
Probably “you will feel so differently about this in just a year” about personal sadnesses (90% are over breakups). And “it doesn’t matter as much what your goals are as that you move toward SOMETHING. You can always change! What’s something you’re curious about?” when they’re in analysis paralysis over post-grad choices
I always tell them life is exciting because we don't know for sure what the future holds. What we can do is equip ourselves with proper knowledge and skills to help us face whatever it is that's in store for us. Have a little faith, grit, and unwavering determination. You will be okay.
