Ever sit down to grade essays you know will be terrible so you put off grading and then you have to force yourself to read them?

Oh, yeah. I put them in order from those I know will be the worst to the best. That way, I gain hope as I work my way through the stack. 😁

Same strategy!! I still take forever to finish, but I feel more productive by doing so in an organized way :)

All the time. I try to put them in stacks of ten. After I finish a stack, I take a break.

I’m stealing this idea!!! Grading essays is so daunting!

Pacing myself with wine & chocolate and/or chips & salsa always helps too.

funny

Wish I could pace myself at 20 per day. It would take me too long to get the papers back! I had a college professor say that a good teacher will give an assignment back in the same amount of time students had to do it. So if I give 2 days, I get it back in 2 days-to the best of my ability. My students are usually shocked and very appreciative of getting everything back in such a timely manner. Plus they have my comments from the writing assignment I just graded to help them with their next writing assignment, so hopefully they don't make the same mistakes twice.

Good for you!

However some day when you have a nursing baby & toddler at home & get up 2 times every night to tend to them, or 2 elementary kids & need to help them with their homework (what in the h—- have they done to math in the last 25 years?) as well as get them to practice/karate/Scouts/music lessons/dance, or 2 older kids, run them to & from their jobs (because you can’t afford for them to have a car on your teacher salary), their sports practices/karate/Scouts/band/dance... and don’t forget your aging parents that suddenly need more help (try organizing the 23 pills they take daily or giving your mom a shower) or are hospitalized for a week with 3 weeks of rehabilitation, or can’t drive anymore & now you have to take them to the doctor & dentist (oh, & you’ve been taking your own kids to those as well for 15 years, so much you almost don’t have time to schedule yourself)...

AND I teach high school English full time. Yes, it takes me longer to grade essays than it used to, however I still truly love my job... but I love my own kids & parents more.

It’s called life, it’s wonderful & messy & I love mine... but at age 22 or 25 I had no idea what was coming.

funny

I give myself a maximum of 2 weeks to get major process papers {7-10 pages) graded.

I just did this.

Doing so right now!

When beginning a piece of literature, I first help the kids access the relevant culture. I got an email last night from a 7th-grade parent because her son said I mentioned the words "male privilege" in class, and she is very concerned about how that is related to ELA (she said "reading"), and she is concerned about this being taught in public schools. To be clear, I didn't do a lesson on this subject but we did discuss rights versus privileges. I've had multiple parents contact the school/get upset with me because of things like his. It's exhausting... Thoughts?

I have high school children of my own, but disciplining high schoolers has always intimidated me for some reason. I have excellent classroom management, but I feel like high schoolers are a little smarter ab getting around rules and less worried about consequences.
