Volunteer at a shelter! You can walk the dogs, have some puppy snuggles, and feel good about helping dogs without a home
I wanted a dog when I first started my job, fostered a puppy that was absolutely perfect and had a breakdown because I realized being single with frequent travel and odd hours would not be a good life for it :(
Would you consider a cat? I always wanted to get a dog but didn’t for similar reasons. The cat distribution system found me and I’m honestly so glad to have a furry friend
Someone just told me about a dog sharing service and I am genuinely intrigued
Have you ever owned one? Why do you want one? Dogs are great companions, but a lot of work they are social animals. You can't leave them alone for 10 hrs a day and expect no mischief and no accidents. And you certainly should crate them while your gone.... way cruel.
Consider a cat. They are lower maintenance and can be left for a few days with an automatic feeder, kitty cam and back up neighbor/friend for an emergency.
But if you have never owned an animal, they shed, scratch furniture, take training and are expensive to maintain.
Cats are less maintenance but some cannot be left alone for multiple days. I have two cats and they are a bonded pair. One of them has separation anxiety, I mostly WFH, but on days I do not she is very needy upon my return and even on days I do WFH - she is very needy.
She’s my shadow all day. It’s hard to tell when you adopt them unless they lived with a family before. The needy one appears as the chill cat but she is not chill for companionship.
