I recently called a staffing agency to find out if any administrative assistant jobs came up. Usually, I’m told weekly that they don’t have anything for my skill set (which includes media-related skills, but I usually look for admin assistant jobs as a backup when going through agencies). This time, I was told that there’s been a noticeable decrease in the admin assistant industry. If that’s true, why am I still seeing plenty of listings for those jobs outside of agencies?

Listings don’t always mean job openings. With all the ghost jobs I’ve run into lately, that is becoming apparent. It’s hard to say, too, how one location varies from the next. There could be an overall decrease, but one area isn’t following that trend.

I’ve been wondering if the staffing agency is giving me a run-around, since they get commission for placing people. So, I think, how do they have nothing every week? And are other temp workers of theirs being told the same, regardless of what types of jobs they want? I encountered this weekly pattern years ago with multiple agencies saying they don’t have anything. My skills include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access Database, Outlook), typing 50 wpm, organization, written and verbal communication, creating various business files. I can put together tri-fold brochures, business plans, marketing plans, press releases, use Adobe InDesign for publication layout. I taught myself WordPress for blogging and can quickly learn new skills (for instance, I had to use a Penn Dot app on an iPad for a recent job and I didn’t need a lot of help with the app). It’s just strange for an agency or multiple agencies to state they have nothing on a weekly basis, as my skills aren’t uncommon.

I went to a temp agency, I do clerical work as well, and the director told me that the job market is slow. That it is hard to get a job. I been looking for 5 months for a clerical job and it hasn't been success. I see all these admin assist positions posted. I went on an admin assist position a few months ago. The manager wanted me to do sales also besides the clerical duties. The sales description wasn't even in the job description. Now a days, the employers want you to do everyone's job plus your own job. I am not trained in sales, that is a sales representative's job. Then she tried to compete with me in the interview, it was bizarre

For those who work in Agencies, how do you accurately identify the work capacity of your Account Management team? I layer on time tracking, but smaller billable accounts will sometimes be just as demanding as larger billable accounts which create profitability issues.

I just found out a new colleague was brought on at 20% higher salary than my current salary. (Have been w/ firm 1.5 years) She doesn’t have a 4-year degree (working on it). How do I bring this inequity up and ask to be compensated equally? I have years more experience and My work is more complex - she is basically a receptionist. Any suggestions would be helpful!

Hi- I’m an hourly AA, been on the role for 6 months now and it’s my first AA job. I did not get a raise when I took the job because it was technically a demotion ( I was a team leader at a contact center). I assist two VPs and now they want to add a third because they’re looking for the “ 3:1 ratio “. Should I ask for a raise? Is this normal? I know another AA that handles 3+ people but idk if she’s hourly or salary. Any thoughts?

Most titles I've found interesting are along the "medical assistants" role, but don't fit the bill cause I don't have an MA license

Happy Wednesday everyone. I'm so excited, I have a recruiter call scheduled with @Meta for Administrative Partner position. I've been in my current employer role for 19 years and I'm nervous as heck. I haven't had to do an interview in so long. Can someone please tell me what to expect with the recruiter call? I'm assuming it will be mostly about the role, my skills and background? Do they ask salary expectations? I have no idea what to say for the salary question. Feedback appreciated. Thanks
