I recently hit senior in public and decided it was finally time to exit. In school, they make it sound like a senior title is a golden ticket to any industry job you want. Instead, I’m being told I’m not qualified because I haven't worked in-house before. I feel like I followed the career roadmap perfectly just to hit a dead end. Is a PA background not enough anymore?

How long have you been a senior? If you were just promoted then most wouldn’t hire you as a senior role in industry without experience as a senior in PA. It’s not the title that’s valuable it’s the experience.

Agreed. A newly promoted senior with only 2 years of experience isn’t the golden ticket it once was. A lot of companies in industry are looking for experienced seniors/managers with 4-6 years experience for their “senior level” roles.

I was in this same boat, it was crazy. Something shifted and im really not sure why. Its was like being entry level all over again.

I ended up at a consulting firm and ironically making more money to do industry accounting, finance, and project based work. It’s been great. I’m happy to tell you more if you reach out, my firm is hiring and targets seniors in public.

Out of curiosity. How would a company view a potential candidate who has a period of unemployment to study for the CPA. I am considering to start studying for the exam but I know I would need to leave my employer in order to give 110%. I am contemplating the idea of at least passing one part while employed. Then leaving my employer to study FAR. I am considering to leave my current employer anyways, so it’s more of how my future employer would view that lapse.

been in industry (small companies) for 5 years with an active CPA. Wanted to get in SEC reporting roles but almost every company requires 2-year public accounting exp. Now applying for public accounting firms entry level positions but almost all firms HR asked if I had ever worked in firms. Got rejection emails from firms all the time. Is this a dead lock? firms exp matters much more than a CPA license?
