I recently learned that some roles are hired as backfills while others are true growth roles, and it seems like that can affect how flexible compensation is. I’m trying to figure out whether that should change how I negotiate. Have you noticed differences in salary flexibility between backfill and growth roles?

The conventional wisdom about that is that if a role is a backfill, there's a budget set for it. If you come along and you're asking for more than the previous person in the role received, that can be a problem. Meeting your number would likely mean it has to be explained to someone. If it's a growth role, there could be more open sky for negotiations. With no history of the role, the salary band could be wider, and you might be able to make a good case for yourself. Of course, this may not apply to the specifics at a particular organization.

Very good to know. Thank you!

How would you know what specifically you are coming into? I’d assume that the role could change based on the performance once you start working. Although that doesn’t do much for the initial negotiation.

I have only seen this on my team who is hiring for new roles recently so was just curious!

There would be a budget for either roll because the hiring department has a budget that they have to be within.

Thank you!

I feel like every company lies about “working your way up.” You’re never allowed to blatantly say that you don’t like your position and you’d like to transition to HR or Finance. It’s almost as if once you get in claims, you’re stuck.

If you’re a manager and you see an employee that wants to branch out into a different department, why would you keep them boxed in for 2+ years?

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

I feel I over meet the qualifications in some areas and just meet them in others. The recruiter said 50k is the salary the company is offer. I know I can negotiate. What are your thoughts on what the salary should be?
