I recently started a position. This is my second week. While it's not a bad gig, and I would have stayed, I was just offered a much better job that is set to start the first week of May. Should I give the current job a 2 week notice once my background check clears? I am still in training and orientation, so I'm not sure if they would even accept a notice?

Remember a lot of places are rescinding offers the day before you're supposed to start, so I would wait until you pass your background check.

So you're saying to give my notice at my current job after I start at the new one?

Given that you're still in the early stages of your current position and have just received a much better job offer, it's understandable that you're considering leaving. Here's how you could handle the situation:

1. Wait for Background Check Clearance: Once your background check clears for the new job, you'll have confirmation that everything is set for your transition.

2. Review Employment Contract or Company Policies: Check if there are any specific requirements or guidelines regarding resignation notice periods, especially considering you're still in training and orientation. Some companies may have different policies for employees in their initial stages.

3. Consider Giving a Notice: Despite being in training, it's still professional to provide a notice period. This gives your current employer time to adjust and possibly make arrangements for your replacement. Typically, a two-week notice is standard, but depending on your company's policies and your role, it could vary.

4. Speak with Your Manager: Schedule a meeting with your manager to discuss your decision. Be honest about your reasons for leaving and express your gratitude for the opportunity. Offer to help with the transition process in any way you can during your remaining time.

5. Be Prepared for Various Responses: Your current employer may accept your notice and appreciate your professionalism, or they may decide that your departure is immediate based on their policies or needs. Be prepared for either scenario.

6. Maintain Professionalism: Regardless of how your current employer reacts, maintain professionalism throughout the process. Your reputation and relationships in the industry are valuable assets.

7. Prepare for Your New Role: Once everything is settled with your current job, focus on preparing for your new role starting in May. Ensure a smooth transition and be ready to hit the running in your new position.

By following these steps, you can navigate your transition professionally and minimize any potential negative impacts on your current employer while setting yourself up for success in your new role.

Right?! So obvious. Not sure how they omitted the word “ground” in #7.

like

Technically there should be a probation period where you don’t need notice to leave at will. Maybe check the offer and see if they mention anything regarding that.

like

True, but only if you choose to be 'that' kind of employee.

I believe that is a courtesy that you should extend to your present employer.
After all they did give you an opportunity.
Don't burn any bridges.

Don't tell the current job anything until you're 100% certain the new one is a lock. Then, yes you should provide them with a notice.

like

If you are in training and being paid, you have already started. They are investing in you and believe you have potential with the company. If you want the other job, tell them you will accept, but need to give your current employer two weeks notice. This will then give you an idea of what type of employer you will be working for and how the company responds to things regarding morals and ethics. I would never want to work as an employee for a company that cannot understand giving your current employer two weeks notice. It also sounds as if you have made up your mind to leave, pending your background check. Additionally one you give your current employer your two weeks notice, they will tell you need to leave and even pay you for those two weeks as you have access to all the financials. So you will be able to start the other job as soon as you give your two weeks.
