I thought getting my CPA would unlock all these new doors, but instead, it feels like it’s boxing me in. Every recruiter wants to talk about tax, audit, or controller paths. Meanwhile, I’m out here trying to explore business ops, strategy, and product finance. I know the designation adds credibility, but I feel like people stop listening after they hear accounting. Has anyone else experienced this? How do you reframe your CPA to show breadth instead of limitation?

I’m going to be honest with you here - if you wanted to explore business operations, strategy, and product finance, why would you spend your time and energy taking tests that specialize you in accounting? It adds credibility to you as an accountant. It hasn’t boxed you in - you chose to specialize in accounting and therefore recruiters see you as someone who is knowledgeable about accounting - that’s what the CPA signals. That’s the credibility it gave you.

If you want to expand your horizons, maybe going to business school to pivot into more strategy oriented roles would help you make the move you’re looking for! At least from what it sounds like, that might be a path worth looking into.

Agree with SA1 comment above, the CPA adds credibility in accounting, not in other areas you have listed. What experience/education do you have in areas you’re trying to explore? It’s like getting PHD in literature while being interested in IT jobs… yes, it adds credibility but in a different field…

Salam. 23M here - all my life I’ve had my back on our faith - never really prayed but had imaan (I guess). After bouts of depression from girl problems (🙄), issues within immediate family, being disappointed expectations I had for myself, etc. I’ve been working on bettering my situation over the years. Faith is the only area where I think I need more guidance. Having trouble relating to friends or family about this. Anyone else been thru something similar? How have you connected back to Islam?

UPDATE (RE: SoCal Assistant Controller Interview)

So after two weeks of waiting (and giving up on the idea of getting the job really), the recruiter got back to me.

They said due to month-end and quarter-end close they were busy and couldn’t get back to me as quickly for a “good update”.

The recruiter said the CFO enjoyed our call, she, the CFO, will call me next week directly to “discuss some final things”.

Not sure if Im hired or not, but are there any questions about the job, comp (cont.)
