I took my current job out of financial necessity, but it’s not in my industry of choice. I’m incredibly grateful to be employed, of course, and the people I work with are nice, but I worked hard to get into my dream field (healthcare) and want to get back. For this job, I have to be in the office every day, so I don’t have much flexibility for interviews. How do people handle job searching when they’re tied to a 9-to-5 in an office?

For me I had been with my company 7 years when I started looking so I either used PTO or took sick time for "appointments" that people assumed we're for a doctor. I also strategically took lunches around the interview time. If it was one on the phone I'd take it on my car. If it was virtual, I'd book a room at the library which was right near my work. In personal would be more of a challenge and definitely require time off. Luckily most interviews I had were not in person.

I applied for a few jobs last week, 17 jobs yesterday, and have started my search again today. I have the experience but I can't seem to get a break. It has been hard on my finances and my confidence. Good luck ladies. I do wish you the best on your job hunt.

Literally having the hardest time finding a job! I’ve been a legal secretary/bookkeeper for over 12 years and you would think I wouldn’t have a hard time but here I am…… the struggle is real!

I'm in the same boat. I'm working somewhere out of necessity while continuing to look. I do phone calls in my car at lunch. I also think they understand job hunting is delicate when you are currently employed.

When I was job hunting, I’d spend 30 minutes each morning before work applying for jobs or sending follow-ups. After hours, I’d try to squeeze in phone interviews when I could. It wasn't perfect, but most companies understand.

Generally speaking, it's better to be looking for work when you have a job. And potential employers can be understanding when you explain time constraints you may have. You can apply in the evenings, and if you make it to doing interviews you can figure it out, either take a day off or see if you can do it very early or after hours.

I'm having the same issue. I was told a week ago that my boss has terminal cancer and the office would be closing by June 1st. I work for a sole practitioner and it's just the two of us. Today, I was told that the office will close by the end of April. I am his Legal Secretary, Paralegal and Office Manager and swamped on a normal day. I now have a list of priority items I need to do to close the office. How can I find time to do all that AND interview AND take my daughter to look at colleges AND see my own doctor when I can't get away from the office?? Do I seem stressed to you?? 😳

My boss is now in the hospital. He had a procedure related to his cancer and has heavy duty meds so he's sleeping 90% of the time. I'm working with another local sole practitioner to handle clients and courts, decide what case files will be transferred to what attorney, files returned to clients to find new counsel, or should've been closed. Next week, I'm teaching my bosses' daughter how to use QuickBooks for billing and incoming checks after the office closes. Since he got sick, I've been the Paralegal (filing motions for continuance and various other things that were completed prior to his leaving), the Legal Secretary answering the phone and all emails, and office manager doing all of the final billing and maintaining/reconciling eight bank accounts for the office, Trust Accounts, and Guardianship accounts.

I guess I just needed to tell someone how swamped and overwhelmed I am.
