AWS cloud application architect. Had an on-site interview with AWS a few days ago and just got an email saying they want to talk to me about next steps. The role is cloud application architect but I want to ask them about the senior cloud application architect role. I have all the relevant experience for that role and feel like I’d be a better fit for that senior role. How should I approach this conversation? Is this even possible? Amazon

It's probably a good idea to get some guidance before you do it. Some companies have security concerns with people logging in from other countries. And it's possible you won't even be able to log in. And besides the geographical and technical aspects, it could look bad if it somehow becomes known that you're outside the country.
True. If you go to another country without telling anyone, security might block you, thinking you're a foreign hacker. Then you either don't work that week, or you come clean about where you are and your boss most likely hears about it.
“Hi, boss. I’m planning to be in Mexico for a week on X date. Is it okay if I take my laptop with me so I can work from there?”
I’m not sure why you wouldn’t want to be forthcoming. Where I work, it’s a huge issue to access any company info outside of the US so I’m not sure if asking for forgiveness later is the best option when your job could be at risk.
Mexico (depending on the location) is safer than the United States right now, and I’m saying this as a Caucasian Male . I was there much of January walking around with an Apple Vision Pro.
Don’t be a jerk, it’s quite simple. Tip well and respect the culture, don’t go down there and complain that no one speaks English. I’d simply ask if there’s an out of country policy with your boss.
IT support specialist 1 comment sounds pretty racist and the type of person to drink too much tequila, pass out and drown in a pool and have his family say the entire country isn’t safe on Fox News. I got down there often, never had a problem.
Tell them you’re just going to the Gulf of America
How about you don’t say anything and just go. It’s only 1 week. Ask for forgiveness not permission. We’re adults, not children 🤦🏻♂️
As long as you have decent internet to do your work and be on meetings.
I was traveling for 6 weeks throughout Mexico while working remotely in 2021 and I didn’t say a damn thing, no one knew so talking from experience
If the company logs actions on your laptop, they could see you establishing reverse ssh proxy, right? Unless you used other hardware to spoof your home wifi hot spot using proxy.
Not posting about it
Unfortunately you may not even be able to access your work laptop from outside the country. I’d just be forthcoming about to.
Have you considered there may be contrutual obligations for the work to be performed in the US/ConUS? If you go and the company breaches because of it, you could put other people at risk. Just ask, don't be a selfish idiot that risks other people's livelihoods because you want to party during Spring Break. Alternatively, do what I'm about to do... Take a vacation!
Be proactive and transparent. There is no harm in asking but don't be opaque about it.
Your contract of employment probably requires you to ask permission to work from any place other than your home address or a company office. Work from another country may expose the company to tax or insurance risks.
Even more importantly, if you work for clients, your company's contract with the client probably stipulates where the work must be done. Sensitive data cannot simply be taken to a different regulatory environment without permission. In other words, working from Mexico may expose your company to legal and contract risks.
I promise you that if you are not forthcoming and are found out, most companies take that as a serious disciplinary matter and may well fire you. If they are conscientious, they will inform the client and if the client decides to take action you are almost guaranteed to be fired.
Be responsible. Be transparent. Be reliable.
I agree. Depending upon the nature of your work, confidentiality and legal agreements, and whether or not data contains PII, there may be restrictions about working outside of the USA or a country that is not part of the Five Eyes.
Why risk your job? Be transparent. Check with IT regarding security issues or other constraints regarding taking a company laptop to a foreign country. Or take PTO and enjoy yourself.
I would say in this instance get permission, from a security perspective, transparency and all that doesn’t seem worth it - why hide/lie. Be truthful.
I would avoid without speaking to HR or your manager. There are tax implications for employers and employees when employees work overseas. If you don't know what those will be, you really need to ask first. Also, if you use company software/hardware, they can track its location, so I would absolutely NOT try to ask for forgiveness and do it anyway.
Ask your manager opinion about Thicc Latinas and start from there son! You good! 👍
If your IT department is on their game, your source IP ON A VPN connection will give your location away. Some companies have policies against “nomad” work scenarios. Recommend, if this is a job you want to keep, that you don’t try and hide it.
Are you just trying to not use PTO?
That's why you reverse ssh proxy to your home network and VPN from there.
Instead of risking just take leaves and enjoy your vacation
I have a novel idea, how about telling the truth
Get a travel router and vpn from the US. Very easy set up and no one is the wiser.
Or just pick your location with the vpn provider? Regardless it’s about being in the US and not international…

What does your policy say is required of you?
Mention it in an off handed manner. Maybe say you have to relocate for a few days due to a family matter.
We have a Work from Anywhere policy for upto 30days. There is a whole approval process, but not too crazy. I had planned to work from Paris during the Olympics but chose not to.

Tell them you’ll sue for breach of WFH agreement with the labor board.
Don't do it without telling your boss... This isn't about control or managers being unreasonable... Corporate insurance policy might not cover equipment leaving the country. 9 times out 10 it'll just mean your manager needs time to add an extra to the insurance to cover you while you're on the trip, so give them plenty notice and I doubt it'd be an issue.
Market research trip
Better to tell them your plans and make sure it's allowed. There are sometimes labor laws or company security contractual/compliance laws that conflict with working from foreign countries. Better to know if you can do it vs. getting fired or put on the sh!t list.
