After the zoom, I am sitting here thinking, how did I get here? Being kicked around by overconfident children on a project that is really more suitable for a medical writer than a copywriter. I am happy to be working but this gig is rough. Of course it makes me ask bigger questions: how did i get to this side of the business? And how can i get back to where i want to be.
The oldest millennials are 38 now, so I think your issue is less “kids,” and more “this particular asshole.”
Finished up the gig with most of my sanity in tact, but wanted to share a few sound bites. From the "account manager" (who according to her LinkedIn profile was an intern five years ago) during a copy editing work session integrating client/legal feedback...every edit I would suggest, she would dismiss my suggestion with, "Let's come back to that one." Finally after the fifth one (ten minutes in) I excused myself from the call. Another, but this time from the medical person: i was tasked with putting together a 31 pg PPT deck based on some highlights she made in a finished brochure. And when I wanted to talk her through it, she talked over me at every turn, and when I calmly said, "It would be great if you could let me finish..." She did let me finish, but then said, "Well whatever about all that..." and then continued to berate me for misinterpreting her post-it note instructions. When I mentioned these gems to the lead creative his response was, "yeah that sucks but they're nice people. It's a personality conflict." WTF dude. Way to have your creative's back. I know as a freelancer I forfeit the luxury of that protection, but mention it too because WTF!!!!!!!
Age aside - At the heart of my role is ensuring: what is happening is what is supposed to be happening and that it's abundantly clear to all what should be happening. There's actually a lot of nuance to it and it's tough to achieve without a lot of unecessary overhead. An area of great agency dysfunction (most orgs, really) is the waste and frustration that follows from teams that aren't aligned - #ready-fire-aim
