That sounds like a 🚩 on the interviewer’s part, not yours. What a weird thing to say.
Be yourself, be confident in yourself, speak with confidence and if you are recommending and presenting make sure you believe in what you are saying and back up what you are saving/recommending with whatever concrete examples, reasons and beliefs you have.
Agency life can be cutthroat and you will be tested and you will be questioned with what you say/recommend especially if someone doesn’t necessarily agree with it.
You won’t know until are you in it but if you can’t be yourself and the culture is toxic then that’s not an agency you should be at

I’ve had this feedback before. I found out the clients on the account were absolute maniacs, so I was grateful I didn’t get the role. We need more nice people in advertising, don’t stop being yourself. You’ll find a spot that fits your vibe!
A lot of the smartest and successful people in advertising I know are also the nicest and sweetest humans.
The industry needs more good people, not more assholes.
Yes, it is cutthroat, I’m not gonna sugar coat it, but that doesn’t mean a nice person can’t survive it. As long as you know how to stand up for yourself and not get pushed around, you should be fine. You can do that, and still be a good person.
Don’t listen to them. You should be able to just be yourself.
Reality is that agency life can be brutal. Clients and revenue are beasts. BUT, I have plenty of kind, empathetic and wonderful people on my team. It’s what makes it all worth it. I can’t imagine saying that to someone in an interview, so they are either someone you don’t want to work for anyway, or brushing you off for some other reason.
If your agency account lead isn’t equipped to speak up to the client, that’s on them. Creatives create. Account leads handle clients.
Your temperament is fine. Sounds like they want you to do two jobs.
You may have come across as spineless in the interview. There's a difference between being a good person and just being a pushover. You can be nice in agency life, but you cannot be naive. You have to be able to defend your ideas, manage client and colleague egoes, and be oppourtunistic when possible. I wouldn't say it's cut-throat, but it is competitive, and getting work you laboured over shredded at a moment's notice isn't for the faint of heart.
Don’t take that job if you can help it, especially if the interviewer would be your manager.
