Well, first take a look at what your grades are measuring. Are they measuring mastery of science or compliance (completion)?
Provide redo and makeup opportunities for students so they can revise their work and also hopefully their understanding.
If I have more than a couple of student, I always blame myself. I use Quizlet for study reviews and that has helped tremendously
Have you tried Kahoot? It is free and the kids love it.
I agree with the last comment, you need to look at your assessments. In addition, look at your activities. Make sure all types of kids can benefit and learn from the activity. Not just kids that are good readers, writers, and test takers.
It depends on why they are failing ? Bombing tests? I agree with the first comment. Not turning in work and general laziness?hound them.l hate hounding students for work but if your job is on the line, then get in their grills. Hand out detentions. Call home and document it all. It's sad really but you have to show that you did everything you could.
Make sure everything thing is weighted the same. Also, do not grade homework, because not all students have the same access to people that can help them with it or areas to do their homework.
Also take a look at your grading policy. If you give zeros consider using 50% as your basement. This makes each letter grade a 10 point span. If a kid is having a rough time and is getting zeros it is very hard to turn it around but with a 50% they have a shot. Both 50% and 0% are F’s. Also how much do you take off late work. Stay within -10% to -20%. Mor than that and they don’t see the benefit. Lastly email home. I send myself the email and BCC all the parents (and students if they have emails at your school) on one generic email about the missing assignment that way you only have to write one email per assignment.
