Welcome to the industry, where every CCO and GCD will gaslight the world into believing they came up with every idea. At least you got credited in the Lion!
It was their idea to green light your idea
At least they did right by the work. I left my last agency with a great idea and they fucked it up completely.
But yeah, no matter how many times it’s happened to me or I’ve seen it happen to others , still amazes me how immature the industry is when it comes to taking crediting ideas.
They didn't do shit. The idea was approved and produced before they came in. The former CCO was let go, and I left because it was the only thing holding me at that place. The idea was wrapped by my former partner, who was the creative director, and it aired around the same week the new CCO started, and just as it happens, they got their name on it. They weren't even responsible for submitting the idea to Cannes because the idea was a favorite of the network board.
Now you’ll have to tell us which idea it was, or it didn’t happen. Hints are fine.
The idea is now a decade old. The interview took place about 2 years ago. The idea was made at a Chicago agency.
This is as much as I can say.
These people will always exist and you can’t do anything about it. Best to be generous and tactful. Especially if you wanna get hired
I hope in that interview you gently corrected the record. This happens all the time.
Exactly as OP said. If you see a CCO or GCD taking full credit for your idea, you’re not going to convince them they didn’t come up with it, and challenging their narrative only gets you in hot water. I’m sharing this from experiencing it many times. Heck, I’m experiencing it now. It hurts every time, but you just live with it if you’re gonna work in this industry. If I ever get to GCD/CCO, I won’t work that way. But it seems anyone at that level has to step on a lot of people to get there.
I had a brilliant and emotional boss who threw someone out of his office because in his interview he presented my bosses' idea as his own.
Nothing is more overrated than thinking the CCO is the person responsible for the ideas. They end up in credits by osmosis, just by being in the position above everyone else. I even had a global CCO who messed up one of my projects before it went to Cannes, saying the case wasn't good, didn't seem credible, blah blah blah. The result: it won the Grand Prix.
If the owner of an ad agency hires a CD to create a campaign and the work wins many awards, should the owner not attach their name to that work, even they had very little input in the idea? I know a CCO is not the same but they do oversee all creative groups and make high-level decisions to have work produced. I’m not negating your concerns/gripes of your personal experience, but trying to see this from another POV. What I highly disagree with is how they don’t give others credit or accolades for the work done. No person does this work on their own.
Man, but not white.
