If I want to change practice areas, what is the smartest way to do this? Do I just apply to positions in the relevant practice area and talk about how my skills from my current practice area transfer?

Join your local bar association and join the committee for that practice area to meet attorneys in that practice area. My local bar association usually offers free CLEs during the committee meetings. Also, look into whether you can do some pro bono work in that practice area.

I’m on a pro Bono case in the area I want to move into. I’ll look into joining the committee!

I’m hoping someone might have some ideas about this- I’m currently five years out of law school with a clerkship, a tax LLM, 3 years of experience doing transactional tax work and a few months of EC/VC experience (which I recently switched to from tax). I like the EC/VC work, but I don’t know how long I want to stay in biglaw. Can anyone weigh in on how employers for in-house roles might look at my experience in a year or two?
