If my firm asked me to interview law students for summer associate positions, does that mean I’m held in high regard? I’m a second year.

It probably means you are not held in low regard. I am not sure it necessarily means high regard though.

likefunny

lol perfectly put. It basically means they think you’re personable and sensible enough to not be an embarrassment to the firm as one of the faces of its recruiting efforts. Nothing more, nothing less.

I’ve been on a PIP and probably going to be fired soon but still get asked to do interviews lol.

Hope you’re honest with them and tell the candidates to run away!

I am on the hiring committee and did multiple interviews but was pushed out this week…luckily I have something lined up for March.

We get a mass email from recruiting to all junior to mid level associates in our office asking our assistants for our availability to schedule SA interviews, so I don’t think it says anything about the firm’s view of us but other firms probably approach it differently

A highly regarded junior

No. Even first years do interviews at many, if not most, firms. And not just the best ones.

A firm i was at laid someone off 2 weeks after they interviewed summer associate candidates lol

Reading this thread has me wondering: are individual layoffs/ firings in big law more common than people may realize?

Only if you’re interviewing candidates, apparently

I work at a ‘free market’ firm and have developed a very good reputation among partners. Naturally, they are drowning me in work. Each time a new case comes up, the partner will email asking if I have “time and interest” in helping. When I’m at capacity, I take these words at face value and explain why I can’t do it, and that seems to work out ok with no hard feelings. But what’s the “interest” thing? If I don’t want to work on a toxic tort case, do I just say that and pass?

I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

“Keep costs down”???? I am happy to keep costs down by not working on this ducking matter anymore. Maybe stop saying yes to matters that are too small to justify our rates and staffing an expensive senior person on them when you’re already dying trying to get anything staffed.
