If you could ask for anything at your firm what would you ask for? (Something realistic but a stretch)

Normalizing & enforcing leaving by 7 (I wouldn’t dare dream of earlier lol)… yeah a few late nights every now and then, but man it would be amazing to live a life outside of the office after 7 most nights. I could actually have a healthy social life, dating life, exercise routine, all of that if I knew I could honestly commit and consistently follow-through by arriving to said commitment by 7:30 lol. All wishful thinking 😅

like

Normalizing this is probably not ever achievable. But just doing it / enforcing it without asking anyone and without it being normalized is achievable today.

A5 by “break,” I mean: a pause in work or during an activity or event. Parental leave is literally a break from your job. I didn’t say it’s a vacation if that’s what you’re implying.

MP2, I think that’s helpful but probably not far enough for most people. It’s like asking a new student to translate Latin and telling them where they can find examples (or even a dictionary). The samples don’t mean much in a vacuum. I give them examples also but then walk through the point of what we’re trying to do in this particular document, before they start. I assume they don’t understand until it’s really clear that they do. I don’t do this because I’m nice (although I’d like to think I am), but because it makes my life much easier when I get their draft, and even easier as they learn.

I think the most important thing is for them to understand what the problem is and what you’re trying to accomplish. It’s otherwise very hard to be a problem solver.

For time off (whether sick, holiday or PTO) to have hours that count towards your annual goal. Otherwise, feeling sick for one day means more work when you get back. It would be nice to actually have a day off mean a day off and not a day that needs to be made up at another time.

7 year lawyer here. Been with the same big national firm all 7 years (not BigLaw) doing complex litigation. Been working remote a long time due to moving around for wife’s job. As a result of the moving was bumped off partner track. I’m looking at a great small firm that will be a practice change (but still litigation). I’m told they’re looking for someone with less experience and they’re skeptical because of my experience. It’s frustrating. How do I overcome this?

I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.
