Mid level atty in a fast moving case. Earlier this year jrs brought on the team to help lessen work flow. Both partner and I delegate certain tasks, esp when we’re super busy. Junior goofed regarding deadlines (which I had to ask for twice); now partner is stressed, tho we should be able to lock in an extension. Jr took ownership of the slip up. I owned that I should have checked his work, but I feel that I hurt my rep. w partner. What to do? Lay low? Not a fan of throwing ppl under bus.

Sounds like you guys both handled this well. This will likely be water under the bridge once you've secured the extension. Just stay on top of deadlines and the juniors going forward and show you learned from it as a manager and responsible lawyer. Stuff like this happens to everyone with a certain amount of lit experience.

like

You don’t have to throw anyone under the bus, since it’s your fault as much as his. Apologize to the partner for not keeping on top of it and tell them you’ll triple check to keep on top of things in the future (and do that)

like

Agreed. There is nothing worse than listening to an attorney standing @ the podium telling the judge all about how his flighty Secretary just can’t keep track of anything & that’s why the brief was late. Own it & put it in your rear view. Like the others said-if you’re a litigator, you’re bound to miss a deadline once in a great while. I’ll bet the partner has & is probably much less down on you than you think. Be excellent going forward.

Mistakes happen. One day when the junior is more experienced he or she may stop you from making a mistake by flagging something you failed to notice. Never throw people under the bus if you can avoid it. Certainly not people who take ownership and it is a one off.

So a client said she felt “uncomfortable” with me because I set a boundary with her when she repeatedly requested to be involved in discussions with opposing counsel. I stand by my decision not to permit that but I’m here to vent because I can’t see this happening to a white man instead of a black woman. Racism and implicit bias are so exhausting.

Has anyone had to provide references upon receiving a verbal offer (but no written offer)? Company has asked me for references, but I’m not sure how to proceed given that no one at my firm knows I’m leaving yet, my close managers / leadership that I work with are all still at the firm and I don’t want to ask them until I’m sure everything has been signed and confirmed.

Should I ask peers of similar levels?

DE&I is now a core leadership competency. If you are managing diverse talent, it’s important to understand what the term “privilege” means within a DE&I context so you can lead your team to higher levels of inclusivity+develop optimal strategies for solutioning around team issues/challenges. Everyone has some aspect of privilege depending upon the context. Privilege means the absence of obstacles/barriers, not necessarily the presence of perks. Though some would say *that* itself is a perk.
