How do you deal with references as a freelancer? Most of my past gigs - I had managers on paper but it was a formality as I led my own work so don't feel comfortable asking them to be a reference.

Got braids. You'd think I literally got a face transplant from how shook my coworkers are. I don’t know how this mid level hasn’t been fired because they are even rude and bossy to partners and are a nightmare for juniors. Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I've been almost 3 years in my previous company and never have I ever tasted any raise from them. I got transferred to different accounts and LOB it was so exhausting and finally when I decided to leave and send my resignation my Supervisor be like "you know you should be thankful of your job" To be honest the job was very stressful and supervisor at some point is somehow toxic but thankful I get to take my leave.
