Sounds like you guys both handled this well. This will likely be water under the bridge once you've secured the extension. Just stay on top of deadlines and the juniors going forward and show you learned from it as a manager and responsible lawyer. Stuff like this happens to everyone with a certain amount of lit experience.
You don’t have to throw anyone under the bus, since it’s your fault as much as his. Apologize to the partner for not keeping on top of it and tell them you’ll triple check to keep on top of things in the future (and do that)
Agreed. There is nothing worse than listening to an attorney standing @ the podium telling the judge all about how his flighty Secretary just can’t keep track of anything & that’s why the brief was late. Own it & put it in your rear view. Like the others said-if you’re a litigator, you’re bound to miss a deadline once in a great while. I’ll bet the partner has & is probably much less down on you than you think. Be excellent going forward.
Mistakes happen. One day when the junior is more experienced he or she may stop you from making a mistake by flagging something you failed to notice. Never throw people under the bus if you can avoid it. Certainly not people who take ownership and it is a one off.
