If you had a product leader of your team who had major gaps in understanding how your software worked, perhaps had only logged in once or twice, maybe couldn’t verbalize accurately what a feature does. Does that seem effective at an executive level? What sort of system understanding do you expect from you product execs?

Definitely, I would expect them to be knowledgeable on the crux/soul of the product if not every feature.

As a product leader I need to be able to understand how our systems work inside out and backwards, as well as communicate functionality to technical and non-technical groups. While I don’t know everything a software engineer knows, I do need to understand certain technical concepts and be able to articulate those. Yes, even at an executive level.

Depends if that software/app/feature was within their scope. E.g. are you referring to an internal or B2B software product, and they focus on consumer facing products? Everyone can't know everything, even at the leadership level. And they shouldn't, esp if they've built a solid and trustworthy team.

It takes a good 2 plus years for me to really know the ins and outs of a product/service and to be able to intuitively speak for the product. It really depends on the complexity/scope of things but 1 yr is really
not enough.

Anybody work for EY NZ? Realize borders are closed at the moment but my wife and I have been researching a move to NZ for years now. I'm a Micrsoft Biz Apps/Dynamics Developer in the US.
