Ugh no, but at least I get Veterans Day?
I’m on a contract with a huge company that is extremely sensitive to every group. They celebrate every major holiday, every ethnic group, every theme of the month and do a lot of celebrations and tributes - but they weren’t closed on Columbus Day/Indigenous People’s Day. They employ many Latinos/Hispanics and absolutely care about them and everyone they employ, worldwide. I’ve never seen a company celebrate so many things and so many people.
So, I’m guessing your comment is merely a conversation starter. I haven’t gotten Columbus Day off since I was in grade school! No agency or company has ever closed on that day - and I’ve worked at a lot of agencies and companies.

I see the day as less of a celebration of Columbus and more of an opportunity for people to learn where Columbus went and who he encountered. There seems to be a massive amount of ignorance and appropriation around Columbus and Latin American history.

Native Americans are Latino?
It’s not merely “some,” it’s a majority. There’s a reason why Latinos look different than Spaniards and Portuguese people. It’s from native blood.
Columbus brought Spaniards who pillaged and imposed their blood into the native people.
So are we not natives to the Americas anymore? We never left.
Imagine sitting in your home, minding your own business, then your village gets ransacked and a couple hundred years later, none of your heirs who still live there are allowed to say they are from their home anymore. These are the natives that were conquered by Spain and Portugal (Latinos). There are other natives to the Americas that didn’t get the conquered by Spain and Portugal. Those are not Latinos. But they are natives.
Let’s see where Columbus landed. All his voyages put him in the Caribbean, not the US mainland. The first indigenous people he encountered were Taíno. Cubans, Dominicans, Jamaicans, Bahamians, Haitians and Puerto Ricans are all descended from Taíno.

When I worked in Connecticut, we never got that weekend off. I thought it was just a Massachusetts thing.
At least you’re all in the conversation about your people deserving a holiday. Trying being Asian in this country, we don’t get a goddamn thing, ever 🤷🏽♂️
I'm Asian and I really dislike this kind of whataboutism. You're making it zero sum when it doesn't have to be. You can make things happen, starting at your own agency.
