Depends on what you mean by backfired. I’ve priced myself out of opportunities by quoting a number that was too high - but I don’t see that as backfiring. The number was significantly higher than what I was making at the time, but a) they didn’t know that, and b) it’s honestly what it would have taken for me to make a move.
And be willing to be flexible. I asked for a lot, they told me a different number, and I asked how we could get me to my number with benefits, perks, training, moving expenses, early and twice yearly salary reviews, etc. We got to a good place.
Ok. Here's what an OG VP told me:
Ask for whatever you can say with a straight face when looking in the mirror. If you giggle, then they will too, and you need to be more realistic. If you don't giggle then you're ready and should focus your energy on demonstrating value/ providing examples in your meeting.
It's like any other pitch.
I just looked in the mirror and said I want a six hundred eighty four thousand two hundred and fifty for my traffic, scheduling and recapping service thank u great
They’re not going to turn you away for asking 20k higher than they’ll give, they’ll just come back with less. I asked for 60k more than a job offered once, and it lead to a great discussion and brilliant compromise of benefits
Depends what you mean by high. If the norm is $200k and you ask $300k and they give it to you then you better produce fast and great work consistently. Otherwise you will be gone just as fast as you came (or first one out in layoffs).
The trick is to know the range and ask in the middle of average and high end. You never want to be at max anymore because it makes you vulnerable.
∆∆ Aaaaaaand this is why I post less often.
Youth is wasted on the young. Dropping gems up in this piece and but met with snickers (and not the good kind). Oh well. Wish I had someone to give me this much game when I was just starting.
I’ve definitely been priced out before. At $55 at my current place and interviewed at one place that offered me $46 for a lateral move and reaaaally tried to sell it. No amount of “free beer fridays” could make up that difference...
Asked for 110k for a full-time role and got it... supervisor level at a shopper agency.
Research the salary range for your position and location. Then know your worth - are you at the top of that range? Ask up from what you want or expect but don’t be crazy. I have passed on people because I figured they were serious about their salary requirements and what they wanted was way out of line with the market. I figured they would not work for 40-50% less. But if it is a 10-20% difference, I would usually counter or seek to find a way to make it work. The key thing is to do your home work. Good companies want good people and are willing to work with them within reason. Any place that would turn you down without a discussion if you are 10-20% more than they wanted to pay is a place that you do not want to work.
Remember, you can always negotiate time off, and working remotely, get creative!
Do research on sites like Glassdoor. If it’s a title bump try for 20% more. If it’s a lateral move probably only 10%. Never backfired on me yet
I’m worried about going too high at a place I want to go to and them laughing me out of the offer.
But part of me is going to kick myself if I don’t ask. Have they ever rescinded or was there some sort of negotiation?
Asked for 1mm base. Didn't get it, but long term bonus/equity brought it close.
Don’t ask for the ridiculous. Ask for higher than what you see in the marketplace, but know your worth
