COBRA (expensive, limited time) or the insurance exchanges
Those pretty much are the options.
Pro
Exchange is likely cheaper than COBRA and if you have limited income you could get a subsidy.
Pro
Also in Manhattan and also chose COBRA over the health exchange options, because NONE of those options provide out of network reimbursements. NY needs to pass laws requiring out of network coverage for healthcare exchange options, or other products that serve this function. This is especially an issue from the mental health parity standpoint, because most specialized therapists in Manhattan are out of network.
You might also want to check out health insurance through the NY State bar association, your local bar association, or other groups -- like a chamber of connect or trade group.
When I started as a solo, our family was covered for many years under a health insurance company that partnered with the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau health insurance. It was not cheap, but it was far less than buying the plan as an unaffiliated person.

By exchange, are people referring to the ACA? I also saw that ABA appears to have an exchange?
Pro
Yes, "the exchange" generally means your state's health insurance marketplace exchange (start at healthcare.gov)
