The point of a belt is to help you brace better for your heavy lifts. If you don't know how to brace properly for your lifts without a belt, the belt won't do you any good. Once you have a proper bracing technique, the belt enhances it. No specific rule of thumb for what weight to get to before throwing on the belt. I personally throw it on around the 70% mark.
My max weight, not bodyweight. So for me, I don't typically put my belt on until I get around 225 on squats or like 275 on deadlifts. I'm 160lbs (F).
