Buy a home in the NYC area, think Hoboken, Jersey city, Edgewater West New York, etc. or continue to rent?

If you plan on having children, Edgewater has decent schools. Port Imperial in West New York has great commute.

like

The ferry is a great commute but definitely time consuming if the savings over NYC is not significant. I recommend trying it out a few times.

I went with rent in NYC since the new state laws made rent stabilization like rent control so I am effectively locked into 1.5-2% increases. Many buildings built within the last 20 years will be rent stabilized so I recommend looking into it.

Hi - renting in West New York now. If you have the means to purchase, I would. A single or 2 bedroom apartment here will be priced well and with how quickly the neighborhood is changing and all the new luxury buildings going up, they're trying to make this area known as "the commuters dream." If/when you want a larger space or house in the future, you can rent it out or sell.

I thought y’all were talking about Buffalo for a few posts until I google mapped it. I kind of like the irony that it’s actually in NJ 😂

funny

I do believe NYC is a historical rental area (rent is cheaper than a 30 yr mortgage). If you have the cash to buy in NYC I’d recommend remotely investing in real estate to get cash flow / appreciation from a better RE market (and using that to reduce your rent cost).

Lots of folks doing the upstate weekend home thing - can AirBnB it for cash and enjoy it at your convenience etc. + appreciation.

I’ve heard Hudson, but don’t take that as the gospel - upstate is not my strong suit haha
