I’m 32 and 7th year associate, but am still one of the more junior attorneys at my boutique firm (majority of attorneys are counsel or partners). I feel like no matter what I do people still see me as being younger than I actually am. I try to look polished, behave professionally, etc. but I have a young looking face and am very petite so I think physically I just look younger. I also don’t have kids, although I am married. This isn’t a problem per se, but I feel insecure about it. Any advice?

I am slightly older but always want to look younger and do look younger than people the same age and love it. I guess just don’t be insecure about it? You’ll get older and wish you looked young. Professionally, just speak up for yourself in meetings etc. exert a presence.

36 and a partner, I still feel like I’m looked at that way — maybe it’s a young-looking face, it’s probably also partially a gendered thing. I used to find it a little more annoying than I do now. I come prepared, I know my stuff, I do a good job, and I earn respect that way, which feels good. If they want to underestimate me at the beginning, I let them.

Why do you feel insecure? Do people talk down to you or otherwise ignore you?

Without this information, it's kind of hard to give advice. I know i look young for my age, but I use it to my advantage so don't see it the same way you do.

Sorry, OP, i had a busy morning. To answer your follow up question...In most of my encounters, people assume that because I look so young that I have no experience or little to offer in the way of advice.

Usually, that means they feel comfortable in my presence and often over share information, which is useful both when interviewing clients and in court. There definitely has been a few moments where I've been convinced that a judge/magistrate has given me a little more leeway in hearings. But I wouldn't say it's given me a massive advantage.

I’m guessing it has more to do with your title than your age or appearance. I’m an older associate (retooled a ways down the career path) and people just view and treat associates a certain way. I feel like the dynamic is more pronounced at the smaller firms I’ve worked at compared to my old big firm, but it’s possible that’s because I actually was young back then so I didnt notice. 🤷‍♀️ Anyway, it’s frustrating, but I don’t know what there is to do besides grin and bear it until you’re out the other side.
