What advice would you give those who are rattled by this and circling the wagons and haven't been through one of these recession a before?

Something to add to this. I know it’s oh so boring, but ‘value’ focused work is what clients/brands need in recessions. Consumers are going to be very selective in what they buy. Example, we worked on dish liquid during the last recession. Copy that communicated that Dawn/Fairy Liquid did more dishes per bottle versus competitors was a bit hit.
Changed agencies at 49, 55, and 59, and felt exactly like you. Now it will be tested again as I just got laid off last week.

Comforting advice, esp about connecting with HR thank you. Any thoughts on how to navigate job searching in our remote COVID world? Face to face networking is now a call or video chat after extensive courtship via mutual connections. The biases (age gender racial) might be hidden or exacerbate. Wonder if there are any groups or approach methods you recommend
Both my mentors in advertising worked into their 80s. They said their exit plans were: “face down in a bowl of soup”. For one of them that was basically how it went. Both got their start, and succeeded, at large midwestern agencies but left in late middle age. One was the head of his own agency and the other was indispensable to the first. They were out there pitching and winning tech accounts while taking mandatory 401k distributions. Gives me some hope, though ... it’s noteworthy ... they had to write their own rules to make it happen. It’s a lot easier to stay employed when you are the one making that decision.
