I’m a 1L who just passed the CIPP/US. Is breaking into privacy a long shot? Should I just try to get a tech transaction or compliance role?

There is no reason why you can’t work in privacy. If that’s what you want to do, then go for it. It’s no more of a long shot than any other area of practice. All depends on what firm you end up at and whether they have a strong practice group.

Not sure what you mean by distinguishing privacy from compliance. Privacy, in general, is a compliance-focused practice. Also, I wouldn’t consider tech trans adjacent to privacy. I would, however, consider cyber/incident response as adjacent. In fact, I’d be surprised if a fair amount of your “privacy” practice didn’t end up being a decent amount of incident response. The two go hand in hand.

FYI CIPP/US is sometimes table stakes. Firms will want you to have it, but don’t lean on it as some kind of magic credential that will set you apart from the pack. That said, CIPT or CIPM carry a bit more weight given there is a practical focus.

like

Incident response is not privacy - that’s its own bubble/practice and getting into that will pigeonhole you into just that.

Cyber has significant overlap with privacy. Can’t have a good privacy program with out good protection (cyber).

You’re a 1L. You can choose whatever path you want. Network, take relevant courses 2L year, find a privacy focused summer internship

like

If I were you I’d intern for your local state attorney general in the consumer protection / public advocacy group and you’ll do a lot of privacy enforcement litigation. Class action firms would be good too because they have a bunch of work. There are a bunch of watch dog groups also.

Not sure why people are acting like certifications are important… Pretty much they’re almost a requirement at this point. And I don’t know any firm that would put a CIPM over a CIPP/US? Yes obviously you aren’t going to get a job if you don’t have a good grades, but I came from a
Lower ranked school with average grades and got jobs at FAANG, a huge financial company, and FPF during law school and that with all my certs and involvement held greater weight than my grades. Now at big law firm

like

Yes I meant aren’t*

like

Solid advice ITT. CIPP is a solid credential but worth dirt in comparison to what good grades are worth. Grades>Network>Certs

like

You're a 1L, why are you limiting your shots?

I’ll apply broadly of course but I want to focus on where I can get a job.

Start networking ASAP.

Understood, I’ve been talking to mainly data privacy people but maybe I should network with tech transactions as well.

i would try big law for a few years then go boutique then go in house. or just boutique then in house. regardless of role or industry be proactive about getting as much “real life”experience as you can.

Hi all! I’m inclined on taking up the CIPM training and certification exam. I’m already a certified Data Protection Officer in the Philippines. I intend on skipping CIPP as it applies to the US and EU.

How difficult was the exam? Can you share your experience studying for the CIPM exam? Is it advisable to skip CIPP?

Many thanks in advance.
