Not sure if a con, per se, but the Big Four doing privacy, doing it well, and doing it much cheaper than big law.

Agree- not the same job at all. Consulting is a foot in the door from an operations perspective, but in house or at a firm deal with much broader privacy related matters.

The work can be totally different. I learnt way more in a law firm. But it all depends on you personal goals too. In law firms, it is easier to get a sense of a project. You can get involved in projects from scratch. While you’re working in an in-house role, you always have to consider the particularities of the company (i.e. privacy culture, relationship with other departments…). I hope this helps!

If your goal is to be at the top of the market or have the most options, Go to BigLaw if you can deal for some time (2-3 years). It will open more doors at the top of the market

A1 didn’t say not doable or doesn’t happen. I know several who have done it. However, it remains statistically less likely and less common a path.

And there hardly any intermediate roles out there.

Let’s say I want to get into pentesting and CEH - where would you advise starting if my experience is minimal? I know my way around things but not much scripting or too heavy network experience. Downloaded Kali on a VM to get some tools, but let’s say you could advise me of a training course/package to start with - what would it be, and from where? My current job is going to let us pick something, and while my answer would be to go to DEFCON 😂 that’s obviously not gonna happen this year.

Additional Posts in Privacy Law

Hi all,
Been doing privacy for about a year now in-house. Got my CIPP/US.
Having major imposter syndrome still. I feel like the minute I finally have a grasp, something changes. The law and nuances just seem overwhelming. Maybe it’s just a lack of guidance/uniformity in the US. I’m not sure if I feel this way because it is simply the nature of the work or because I’m just not capable.
😔
