I’m a first year associate (I have been here a month and a half), what am I giving for Christmas to others in the office and who should those others be? Thanks in advance!

Give your secretary a gift. And if you work with a specific paralegal give them one to.

Always gift down not up and since your brand new a small gift card and a kind thank you note will go a long way for next year and your staff is key to your success. If you do pool secretaries then you don’t need to gift anyone anything.

like

You never offend staff by thinking of them during the holidays, I personally gift every staff member I work with something so I’d give the paralegals a little amazon or Starbucks gift card for $25 it’s little but they will remember you thought of them and when you need them to file at 11:30 pm (and if your litigation you will) they’re gunna be more inclined to be helpful

I just started as a first year in September. I there are 3 legal assistants i work with. I was thinking just something simple like a $25 Starbucks gift card

Don’t worry, every office has one person who badgers the rest of the office to donate to a large gift card.

I'm a 1st year @ a civil lit defense firm. I summered here and got the "our firm culture is amazing, we want to grow and help you learn" pitch and accepted the offer of $75k, thinking that was what most other associates make (I'm 1st gen). But today I found out that associates with 4yrs experience are making $80k; for hitting the 1950 billable req., the bonus is $1k. I've also found there are big DEI problems that I can't overlook. It feels like the pitch was a big lie. Advice?

Can someone just explain how you plan out how much to bill so you can make sure it’s not a mad scramble at the end of year? I’m moving from a firm where I was lacking in any kind of mentorship. No one ever just sat down and explained the most efficient way to track/measure your hours to confirm that you are on track.

Is there just a secret excel spreadsheet that all lawyers have and I just missed the memo???

I've been in practice for about a year at a high stakes plaintiffs litigation firm. I make $85/year, I'm in the office at 8 and leave around 5:30. I work occasionally on Saturdays. When we have something big coming up, I stay extra to get it done in time. I've never missed a deadline.

I had a meeting this week where the partners told me they questioned my commitment because they were working more hours than me.

Am I the problem here and should work more, or is it time to find a new job?

Should I communicate this to client before pushing back against OP’s rejection of the mod?

I am a 25-year-old first year associate fresh out of law school at a small civil litigation firm. I went to a good law school and work hard. I’ve been in this position for about 5 months now and I keep messing up. Losing track of tasks. I have never felt dumber. Any advice? Should I be doing better at this point? I’m a licensed attorney!! Is this normal?

I am an incoming associate (awaiting bar results). I have already begun working as a law clerk and am already being given plenty of tasks to fill my time, which I’m grateful for. I am also fortunate to be in working in an area of the law that is personally fulfilling to me, so a lot of the work I do doesn’t feel like work. Here’s the thing: I do my absolute best. I give polished, clean work, and I always give my personal best. However, it seems like a lot of the tasks I do always get sent back..
