I’m a JD/LLM with three years of M&A tax experience at a Big4 considering making the switch to a law firm. Does anyone know any good firms in the DFW area or can give some referrals? TIA.

I’ve heard that’s difficult to do. Report back if it goes well

It was done during the COVID hiring boom but much rarer now bc firms can be more selective. Unless you have a personal connection or influential individual at the firm or respected by the firm willing to go to bat for you, id try connecting with a partner or even associate outside the amlaw 100 (might be an awkward cold email, asking for career advice) and working your way in from there.

You can try recruiters too but I don’t think they will be as helpful bc their contacts are mainly other in house recruiters who will more hesitant to pass you along since you are non-traditional lateral candidate.

How do you get experience when no one will hire you? I wouldn’t mind hanging a shingle but I feel it’d be irresponsible to do so with no experience. Unlike all of my classmates, I never landed an internship/externship in law school - had only one interview. I was a PT law student, came from a CS background, and worked in IT throughout law school. I passed the bar exam on my first try (Oct 2020) and have only had a couple interviews out of the hundreds of applications I sent out. Any suggestions?

Anyone have any thoughts on a fair salary for a part time virtual tax prep-focused position? I’ve been made an offer for south of 800 hours/year (fluctuating for seasonal ebb and flow, of course), and I’m curious whether it’s a decent offer or not. I have 13 years of experience in a big box franchise where I’ve handled complex returns from day 1. 30% of my workload has been 1120/1120S/1065 and the rest higher-level 1040s and a few 1041s & 990s. I’ll be bringing 75-100 clients with me.

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?
