Be open and honest. It is never wrong to look for what is better for you, but being deceptive can cause more problems. Hopefully the admin feels the same.
It's best to be honest, of course. But it's also just smart to avoid doing anything that would jeopardize being rehired at your current school. So maybe apply to the new school and see how things proceed. Don't tell your current principal until the time comes.
I was in a similar situation but was lucky to have a very understanding and helpful admin team. If you think your principal would be supportive, transparency could help, especially since strong references matter. But if you’re worried about how they’d take it, you might want to wait until things progress. Either way, you deserve to explore opportunities that feel right for you.
When I was looking for a job, many of the applications said "May we contact your current principal?" With room to explain. Do you have any other references?
