Teachers with sped certification are in demand everywhere. I think it’s the not-so-perfect storm of retirements, fewer teachers seeking sped certifications, and more kids being identified as needing services, including the huge uptick in students diagnosed with ASD. TX required all ELA teachers to get ESL/ELL certification on our own dime; I foresee the day when they will require sped certification too. Most kids will be mainstreamed with the LRE excuse, but that may not be the best placement for them (or for other students) if their behaviors are extreme. As it stands now, we have a paraprofessional assisting in 3 classrooms per period—that’s no more than 25-30 minutes in each class. The system is so broken.😭
I teach self-contained and also have the K-3 resource caseload! Also short a para, but its been like that for 2 years. It's stupid crazy.
If they paid sped a bit more, others might consider.
Totally understand that!
We’re down OTs in my district! Anyone want to come to central California? 😁
Lol I’m tempted! 😆 .. I’m not sure my husband would relocate though!
I'm in SPED about to leave either next year or the year after lol! I'm going out of the classroom. Sped is too much.
I totally hear you on this!
There needs to be federal money allocated to provide more stipends for sped teachers in all our states. I’m talking a significant $10-20K per annum. People are not getting paid enough to deal with the excessive bureaucracy, paperwork, meetings, and, quite often, stress caused by physical assaults from students and emotional abuse from parents who threaten lawsuits and even some administrators and other teachers who treat them like the red-headed step-children of many schools.
I think of other areas, but I know I work well with my Special Needs students, in the end, in the most I can do to help others.
