Your former salary is not their concern, only the value that you bring matters is, so stick with that. Figure out the lowest that you are willing to accept, and if after negotiation they can't come in at or above that, your last chip to throw in is telling them that you can't accept for less than $X, full well knowing that they may rescind if it's more than they are willing to pay.
Keep in mind that it's still very much an employers market, they know it, and salaries have fallen as a result. Your replacement for your current role will probably make less than you do.
It is an employers market right now and they likely will not budge. I am in the same boat at you these days with 2nd interviews and nobody willing to even negotiate on the job offer. Even after putting forth all my cards, being transparent, and proving my worth through the interview process and sharing my proven track record with previous job experience.
How far below your current role is it? Are there any non-monetary benefits that could make it worth your while?
Companies aren’t really going to go outside of their range in the current economy, so be mindful of that.
How much is the difference? I would think through that and proving to them that the value you’ll provide is worth the difference
