I'm coming back from medical leave soon, can anyone offer stories of their return from medical leave to help me gain courage? I'm worried things will go terribly wrong on my return.

No personal experience with this, but I’ve seen multiple people do it! I think they kept the counsel/partners who cared about them close and mostly worked with them until the returning people fully regained their footing. Your firm might also let you ramp back up, either informally or through a part time schedule that reduces each week.

Thanks my job means the world to me and I'm coming off of medical leave super worried that it's going to negatively affect things but I couldn't help the medical need that I had.

I took FMLA for a month for mental health and was super nervous when I returned but mostly folks were just glad to have me back. It took some time to get back into the swing of things, so give yourself some grace and don't try to go from zero to 100 overnight.

Maybe schedule a few coffee chats with trusted colleagues to catch-up on what you've missed to help you get comfortable. And continue to prioritize whatever you need to for your health. It's too easy to put your needs to the side in this profession, but if you don't take care of yourself and have your health, nothing else really matters.

You got this!

Got an email from someone who is supposedly wanting to hire my firm, but a few things are giving me pause: 1) I’m a rising third year, so idk why they are emailing me, 2) it just says “dear attorney” then the short message, not my name (though practice group is correct), 3) it is from a gmail email address, not the company. So… do you think this is real? I plan to forward it to a partner, but should I first send to IT to see if it’s even real? Just seems weird to me.

I'm in a litigation, about 9 months in. Is it normal that I spend majority of my time making bundles for my partners (printing, binding, moving docs in a different order whenever there are new documents or he wants to add stuff) reviewing documents and making tables (e.g. dates, which documents are from where), and the only legal work is like notices of admission, list of documents, the occasional research? I'm so bored and I want to quit but I don't know if I have unrealistic expectations.

I’m so bad at writing the background/ facts section for briefs… it always gets heavily edited and no one is giving me constructive feedback other than “advocate more”. Any tips for getting better other than “advocating more”?

Any tips for building a client base from scratch? I’m a 4th year associate at a firm of 12 attorneys. I practice in business, compliance, and real estate (primarily on partners’ files) and don’t litigate. Most of the partners’ clients are wealthy friends or friends of friends (not my circle). Associates are not referred business, even cold calls, and so far “networking” events like Chamber of Commerce luncheons have been a bust. I equate a book to autonomy and career choice and pressure is on.
