Don’t tell them ahead of time. Your age is none of their business.
Hoo boy. I don’t know. Doing this feels like a woman putting “looking to start a family soon” on their LinkedIn profile. While it may be true, you don’t want to make it easier for them to discriminate before they’ve had a chance to meet you and love you.
Good point, thanks.
If you're upset now, imagine not even getting a response much less an interview. That's what you'd get putting Gen X on your resume. I'm Gen X and I've been told to hide any experience past the last 10-15 years.
Same reason people lie about being 29 on their dating profiles; by the time they meet you, they've had a chance to overcome their ageism by falling in love with your work and your personality rather than assumptions about you based on ignorant stereotypes. They're probably lying about all kinds of things related to the job, so I don't feel bad withholding information that's specifically not supposed to be used for hiring decisions. Why not put your religion and political leanings on your resume while you're at it?
I like it. Try it out for a week. When I was freelancing, before getting my current job at 50, I changed my LinkedIn profile a million times. It didn’t seem to matter. Keep it simple. Don’t present your gen ex as sounding self conscious or bitter though.
Thanks for your thoughts, everyone.
I understand it as you don’t want to waste your time interviewing with people who practice ageism.
As a Gen X’er myself, I’ve been there and seen those same looks when I walk in the room.
I even thought about putting my age on my profile too. I hate wasting my time.
Thanks for your empathy!!! I don’t understand ageism. It’s a total waste of time going in!!! I tested how it looked on my LinkedIn and didn’t like it. Recruiter at Wunderman reached out to me last night - on the phone screen I’m going to imply my age, “I’m Gen x” or “ as you can see I’m senior” or something — and see if they move forward. The agency yesterday - ugh - it was traumatic. I could tell they liked me - but more like a mentor ship role. I was even older than svp of marketing in that room. I’m 46.
...tell that they were surprised I wasn’t a millennial! I have had some good freelance gigs but it’s been a year since I’ve been laid off and not landing ft role yet. It’s never been like this for me, usually I land the first interview I get. Have been on 3 and no offer.
Don’t do this
No one knows what GenX is anymore. No Fight Club, Reality Bites, Grunge, Dot Com bomb and bust or Microserfs apparently none of that shit ever happened.
Of course it happened but it doesn’t matter.
