Which scenario have you seen more often? 1. Salary be lowered at annual review 2. Flexibility to be lowered at annual review.
Companies don’t seem to mind playing with flexibility but even the big firms know to layoff folks rather than reduce comp.
Coach
Interesting perspective. It’s much less common to lower compensation. But, they could choose not to raise it.
I really value work-life balance, so that is what is most important to me when negotiating a role. If I have to take a little less pay to have better WLB, that is what I am going to do. We only get this one life, and I want to make the most of it.
Coach
I have to agree with you!
It depends on what the salary range is in the first place. I have a very strong preference for working remote and am currently in my first in-office job in years. I would be willing to take a 15% pay cut out of my current salary in order to be fully remote.
Coach
Thanks for your input. I feel like it’d be a better idea to allow people to be in a space they thrive in.
I generally go for more money but I currently have a lot of flexibility. If I was switching, I try do both money and flexibility but would prefer flexibility.
Coach
Thanks. I feel like I’d do the same.
It looks like wfh is going away quickly - at least in my industry.
Right now my company is in office 2 days a week but I could see that ramping up. I honestly don’t mind it but I am always looking to earn more since my wife stays home and I (begrudgingly) think in-office is a better work environment.
Coach
Maybe. I know I’ve seen some companies “advertise” themselves as remote-first. My company has 4 days in office now.
Ive picked flexibility before and think it was the right decision. But it matters what you are trying to solve for.
Coach
I think that’s an important reminder to me. Thank
Read the room and negotiate where you think you can win? Depends on the salary. If I'm at 110% of my. needs/goals, maybe flexibility. If I'm at 95% of my needs/goals, definitely money.
Coach
Good points. I’m pretty bad at reading the room. Will need to work on it!
