The whole x times your salary is hogwash. You need to estimate your yearly expense and multiply by 25. This is a much better estimate of what you will need in retirement. 25 might not be the exact number, but you can google this method to estimate what you need.
Yeah honestly those retirement benchmarks really stress me out. I’m in the same boat, trying to catch up later in life. Maxing out catch-up contributions is a smart move, though. I remind myself it’s not about hitting an exact number but making steady progress toward financial security.
I have nothing at 58. My salary in insurance is 1/3 of what I made in Mortgage Processing. I make less now than I did in my 30s and 40s. I see no future.
And it always will.
I am on track with my 401K. Here’s my advice—every other month go in and add 1% more to the 401K withholding and you won’t notice it. Keep doing it till you feel like you are on right path for your contributions. I do the max on mine and it is growing fabulously and likely can retire at 59.5 if all goes well.
I think it's a bad idea to get too obsessed with these kind of guidelines. You have to live in the here and now, and pay your bills before the end of each month. It's great to have goals, and you should do what you can to meet them, of course. But if you find yourself falling behind some goalpost a consultant somewhere cooked up, you'll just depress yourself.
