You can still load an eSIM through airalo or Holafly and it should work.
Airalo is minimal, between $5-$10 for like 7 days. But if your phone is locked you won’t be able to use it.
Ohhh this could’ve been me, I just upgraded from 11 to 17 for a Japan trip. But I did it for the photos! 🤩
I think you’re overthinking the Sim, just get esim from Airalo on either device. But it might need to still be unlocked first?? I didn’t even know carriers still locked phones that’s crazy. Just buy from Apple and it won’t be locked to any carrier.
Went to Japan last month and I definitely think it's worth upgrading to a new phone. I have the 13 pro max and the pictures don't compare to the one's that were taken by my friend's 17. Highly recommend the upgrade.
Believe iiPhones 11s can convert to eSIMs. I have a 12 and was able to convert to eSIM in my cellular settings then used Saily to get an eSIM abroad. Super easy. Idk if my phone was l locked or unlocked but i have AT&T and it all worked
It was originally bought directly from Apple, and AT&T later inserted a SIM card. I also checked the settings and it said “No SIM restrictions,” meaning my phone is unlocked.
For the longest time, I thought it was locked because I've been abroad before and could not use another SIM card whatsoever. Why I didn't know about this before, I had no idea, but the problem now is that I do not have an international plan. Should I still upgrade anyway or what else would y'all suggest? Because I'm now leaning more towards the upgrade cause my current phone's battery health is at 74% due to having it for the past five years and I believe it will stop receiving software updates late next year.
Update: I finally made the upgrade, so I am now, for real, able to use eSIMS!
Adding on to my previous statement, there's also the option of getting a cheap phone from Amazon that could be used solely for international travel, but I'm not sure how convenient that would be in that sense. Most phones from Amazon, especially the cheaper ones, run on Android, and I'm not too familiar with using Android software. If anyone has experience using travel-exclusive phones, what could you recommend I do at this point?
One other option is just buy a wireless hotspot with some data and then use WhatsApp for calls and the data for emails.
