When the work lacks meaning, I try to find purpose in connection like mentoring junior staff, improving small systems, or learning something new for myself. It’s not perfect, but it helps me hold on.
That’s smart
When that happened to me, I remembered what it felt like to be unemployed for 10 months and watching my savings dwindle while I tried to find another job. If I had been able to go home on time, I would have then told myself that my drudgery in the daytime was to allow me to enjoy my time off thanks to having money from a job. Alas on top of useless tasks that could have been done by a much more junior person (had they agreed to staff correctly), I had massive expectations of doing work that was meant to be done by 2 if not 3 people, so I was working 12 hours a day, sometimes more. So I couldn't even enjoy my time off because I barely had any and was too busy trying to recover sleep. After a year of that, I started to look for another job. It took 6 months of looking to find another one (which I started 7 months ago). I literally am doing 2 people's jobs (they had 2 people in the department before, whereas I am now a department of one) but have budget for outside support, though it's not the panacea they thought it would be and requires a lot of effort from me to coordinate. So I am still working 60 hours a week and heading close to burnout but hoping that things will calm after a big initiate in January goes live. I tell myself at least I'm earning 50% more than the prior job and still remember the worry of being unemployed, and that gets me through it.
Can you suggest an email instead of a meeting? Small changes do make you feel like you have some measure of control.
