I’m on east coast working for a west coast firm. I’ve been trying to start work by 10:00 or earlier to stop working by 7:00 but still be available for questions if anyone needs anything. But some days I’m working past 9:00. I don’t mind this but my boyfriend was being cranky tonight about wanting to have dinner and I had to work. Anyone else in a similar situation and have tips about managing the time difference and trying to have some week-night personal time?

Yep! Try to spend time in the mornings together, and do the things you care about most early in the day (working out, doing something together, maybe having breakfast instead of dinner together). That way the most important (to you) stuff is done no matter what fresh hell awaits in your inbox during the day. Then you can also pick a weekday that’s your log off early night where you block your calendar and devote time to them. Other nights understanding is you may need to work.

You could also just set a boundary that between X and Y you are unavailable (and block your calendar) for dinner. It may not happen every time, but it can happen more.

Unfortunately, perfect predictability is just not possible in the profession.

Can you just respond on your phone with “sounds good, I’ll follow-up” or “got it, I’ll send the revised draft in the morning?”

So, I would try it. People are in all different time zones. I don’t expect responses from folks I work with in Japan, Hawaii, etc outside of their business hours. I would absolutely try it and wait for someone to tell you it’s a problem.

In a similar set up, where I was on the East Coast but working with a West Coast team, I explored starting my day later, so I worked closer to PST hours.

After working with one supervisor for some time, we worked out that I would log off by X time, otherwise I ended up working longer hours than folks on the West Coast.

Dude 9 pm is fine you could be working 9am to 12 and you’re effectively working 11 to 9, that’s a deal

I am beyond stuck in my first 1.5 years of my career.

I was over promised opportunities at my first gig and then Covid hit. Leading me to have no portfolio worthy pieces from this 💩 agency with nothing great in sight. (place hasn’t won a pitch in my entire time here + lost clients)

I’m juggling re-vamping my site and a side project to hopefully make my book more robust.

With no kind of leadership or mentor, I’m just figuring out how to dig myself out of this hole. Any advice for this chump?

I’ve been out of work for a significant amount of time due to Covid decimating my industry. I’ve gone on many interviews and had a few final rounds. I finally received an offer today. The pay is more than I’ve ever made & team seems great. I just can’t help but feel a little disappointed bc it’s not the industry I was in before which was the whole reason I went to law school to begin with. I’m a 5th year associate in big law. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options?
