I'm slowly realizing that retirement planning is about mindset as much as money. The financial side is straightforward, but the identity side is harder. So much of who I am is tied to what I do. I’d love to hear how others built meaning outside of their professional world.

I’m starting to realize that retirement is really just about having the freedom to aggressively post your political beliefs on LinkedIn.

Sounds like you live to work, not work to live. Focusing on family and community should help to flip that for you. Being a consulting partner shouldn't be your identify.

The most important thing in retirement is to realize you don’t need a professional identity or brand to enjoy life. Your identity is you as a person, connected to whoever is important in your personal life.
You can get fulfillment in the “doing” part by applying your skills to causes near and dear to your heart. Removing the financial considerations (constraints) opens up avenues that were not previously available in your professional career.
Good luck.

Not sure what why you think others share your new found "revelation".

Recently retired and figuring that out now - though I think (?) I feel the opposite of how you feel. My career was great and I loved it - and now I’m trying to find the best way to apply what I learned to other areas of my life. It’s been fun so far and there are no shortages of causes and organizations that want help - the trick (for me) has been narrowing it down to how I want to spend my time. No grandkids yet.

I recently joined Long Angle and find that being surrounded by people who had exits, retired early, etc is helpful in shedding your corporate identity. There are so many very successful, young people who are retired and don’t give two sh&ts about their titles. I about to retire and now feel much more prepared to deal with any potential identity “crash”.

I retired from consulting 7 years ago. Transitioned with an industry job for 6. I currently spend 40 hrs a month advising prior clients. I cap at that.

But 10 yrs before I left consulting I started working on hobbies and volunteering. Continue to increase those now that retired.

I am with you, OP, and share the sentiment. I am also curious on how others have navigated the change.

We have to know that when we ride the subway or are at the airport - no one cares that we were a PPMD or a CEO. What does matter is - did you help solve real issues in the world — polarization, veterans, poverty, opportunity gaps etc. unless you are fixing those issues, I don’t think selling digital transformation & M&A is consequential. The latter is useful to substantiate our IQ/EQ. The former is useful to advance identity. The former problems dwarf the corporate ones.

I cannot related at all, I feel 100% solid in my identity regardless of my position. The work is just that for me, work. If I am watching a great program, reading a book, traveling the world, or making homemade pasta I will feel stable and content in my retirement.

Question: Girl friends parents finally came over for a ristha. Everything went great or so I thought but now she wants to time to think about moving forward. The pain point she brought up is that we are in different states and she is feeling pressed. Although in that time she has started communicating less and I literally had to beg her to get on face time. My gut says she wants to end it but unsure. Any advice ? It's been 2 weeks since this event
