Got messaged by a C3 . ai recruiter. Read that wlb is bad and that the interview process is absurdly long, but the Glassdoor reviews are 4.2 and can't find actual hours worked posted by anyone. How's the culture really? I'd be aiming for DS consulting, something more functional but with DS/ML concepts as my differentiator.

I’ve learned a couple of things. Most people see taking ownership as part of their promotion. They don’t want to do that work if they’re not being paid. Managers think they should show that they can do the work before giving the promotion. It’s up to each company to set what the expected culture should be.
I feel this normally happens when expectations and objectives aren’t in alignment. You can meet objectives but not be a good candidate for a promotion. I expect those looking for a promotion to display the critical thinking to take on the next level, and the self awareness to develop action plans against areas where they have opportunities. If they aren’t proactively building plans to approach a promotion with me, they shouldn’t expect to be promoted.

Promotions are the new participation trophy.
Seriously! We have kids barely a year out of college demanding senior promotion bc someone told them they were special... you can have great potential and delivery but it doesn't make up for experience
Its like managing your kids. They expect much more from you for so little effort.
I personally dont think they are wrong its the perspective and reality that are not aligned.
It takes couple of years and some experience for people to realize how companies work and where the promotions come from.
I have a similar situation where I am tied to extremely junior staff and it’s bad
