Freelance is the way to go. I’m 61 and thanks to double, triple and sometimes quadruple dipping, I had my best year ever. Don’t throw in the towel you young whipper snapper!
@McCann1: my spouse has insurance. I feel you, the insurance thing is a concern.
The fact is the these agencies and clients need people with real experience to get the actual work done. Not sure they want to hire us and put out the press photo of people that don’t fit the profile they want to portray but I would think there are opportunities with the right organizations and at the very least freelance. We just need to play a different game than what got us here. Staying in the game seems like the win at this point and that’s not bad. Best of luck to all of us.
Yeah. I was a big “can I treat you to a cup of coffee?” guy. But then the pandemic hit.
I’m a bit older than you and the last 2 years of freelancing have been the best years of my career. I’ve been at my dream agency for the last 11 months and making A LOT more money than when I was on staff. Plus those of us older folks are more trusted bc we have the years under our belts. And with wfh, you can work anywhere. Go freelance. You will be happier, and you don’t have to deal with office politics or the big dumb holding company calling your CEO to trim staff.
I was at one of those shops a while ago (no one ever thought about my age because I was too busy producing work). But these days I target shops that are well within my ballpark age-wise as far as clients and amount of senior people there. I’m talking more about how none of them converting to full time where I’m freelancing or deciding on me as the final candidate. (I’ve been in second place 8 times now which unfortunately still has the same net end result). But yes, great advice. Trying to work at a shop with Co-workers who are DJing at night and working on shoe or fashion brands it’s probably not going to be in my sweet spot. Maybe what I’m hearing here though is that freelance is the destiny for us older creatives and we just need to keep r we irking it extra hard—harder than looking for full time—to keep the machine humming along.
UPDATE: I just landed an ACD role working remotely for an agency in a smaller market. Can’t wait to get started!
Thanks! Hoping to do just that!

ACD, feel the pain and, not to be Pollyanna—but 53 is way, way too young to be thinking you’re done. No, don’t have a quick fix in mind (I’m tempted to think some of the older recruiters might be a better bet), but please don’t give up. Pinning this to see if anyone in the bowl has leads for you.
Awesome. Thanks so much! Yeah. I know It’s still a bit early. Just wondering if having logged so many applications and interviews if maybe fate is trying to tell me something. But still hopeful for sure.
No advice. Just know that you are not alone in your "towel" idea. Likely with your resume/book, it's just a matter of time before someone snaps you up tho.
Thanks for the sentiment. And I hope so. I know there are plenty of us out there. Just wonder who’s gaining traction and how or what they’re pivoting into besides in-house as I tried that route. Thanks for the good vibes and I wish you well too!
Ever think of trying a B2B or specialty shop? One that focuses exclusively on tech, or non-profits or ag? They seem to be more open to seasoned creatives who haven’t been featured on a reality show or started selling AI artwork NFTs.
I’ve done B2B shops in the past. Might be time to hit shops like those up again. Thanks for the advice!
Here goes. I can hear the cannon balls headed my way.
Consumer pharma. Remote. Pays well. Long gigs. Hired guns and grown ups do well.
75 interviews? Any pharma in there?
I started writing "not your ideal choice for high science/medical writing/annos" in my emails to pharma agencies.. yes, I have lost opps (and money), but it's not worth suffering through projects that want you to be something you're not. Just mentioning this bc there is a range when it comes to pharma projects.
Have you freshened up your portfolio lately? Some of the work might look and feel dated, which makes you look and feel dated to a hiring manager. Suggest you reach out to an ECD you might be friendly with or a recruiter and ask them for a portfolio review.
Good call. Trying to figure out who that might be. Yeah, the portfolio could use some freshening up potentially. (I still have tasty print in there). But also social. I have pitched a lot of those big multimedia campaign ideas only to have them die at the last minute for one reason or another. I wonder if it’s OK to show decks at my level. Or if that seems too newbie-like?
I'm in the exact same boat. I've started reselling and taking online certificate courses. I'm exploring new creative options. But it's so frustrating to be passed over again and again. The youth thinks we're too old and out of touch I think. But they won't say it.
OP, what's the update?
Landed an ACD job working remotely for an agency in a smaller market a little over a year ago. So far so good.
