Yes—setting expectations upfront is helpful for both sides.
“Based on my experience, I’m seeking a salary in the – range. Does that align with the compensation budget for this position?”
-Former Recruiter now Hiring Manager :)
Oh nice. I’ll have to take note of this.
Just ask. "Can you share the range so I can make sure we're aligned?" If they keep being evasive, that tells you everything you need to know.
If they can't give a range, it's probably going to be a low offer and it's misleading and not a good way to start a relationship. Let's say you make 50k salary, say you are in the 50-75k range and see what their reaction is. Or maybe bump it to 60-80k. There's no reason for them to get all of your information without them giving you any. By the reaction that you get you'll know if you should keep going with them or not. Good luck.
I don’t see a problem with just asking what the range is. It would be a waste of time for them as well if you go through the whole process and then don’t accept the offer because it doesn’t pay enough. I’d just be upfront like you said and ask what the range is for the role.
I always ask for the range so we aren’t wasting each others time. No point in going thru 3-4 interviews if in the end they are $20k below your minimum.
