Be sure they eat the Pittsburgh Salad!
In my opinion the food is better in Pittsburgh, and I’ve been to a lot of the Philly restaurants that people there rave over. I have been genuinely unimpressed - especially with the Italian food in Philly. If I had to pick a top three right now, I’d recommend DiAnoia’s, Pusadee’s Garden, and Casbah. I have also heard amazing things about Altius but haven’t made it there yet. Ciccanti’s, Il Burloni, Girasole, and Alla Famiglia all have awesome Italian food too. For steak, I would recommend Eddie V’s or Morton’s, but they are national chains. Napa Prime is also great and is not a national chain. Amel’s is really good - everything on the menu is good. Same with Bistro 19. Off the Hook has excellent seafood. LeMont is always a classic. And of course you can’t go wrong with brunch at the Grand Concourse.
Anything specific you’re looking for? I like Fig and Ash, Umami, Meat and Potatoes or Con Alma. For more casual, I think Cinderlands has the best burger in the city and there’s good vibes at The Abbey.
Monterey bay fish grotto (great view of the city), Casbah, Alla Famiglia and Dish Osteria (Southside) are all great choices
What kind of food/atmosphere are you looking for?
Coop de Ville (fun atmosphere to boot), the new Christian James restaurant (haven’t personally been but heard great things), Condado, Pamela’s for breakfast or brunch, the PA Market, Bakersfield, Sienna Mercato, The Yard, Butcher and the Rye for Happy Hour. And there’s a few newer places along Penn Ave that I haven’t tried yet but all look amazing!
There's lots of good food in Pittsburgh. Yes, it's a smaller city than Philly and there is a lot of the burgers and pizza type stuff some would consider "lowbrow", and some international cuisines are not well represented, but overall a pretty good scene.
Here's some ideas: Apteka, Con Alma, pretty much any of the Richard Deschantz group restaurants, Pusadee's, Casbah, Cafe 33, Spork, Noodlehead, Soba
Let us know how it went!
