Yes, I have.
Your choice is to keep pushing or back down. I hope you keep pushing.
Also, remember that retaliation for raising concerns is illegal. Don't be afraid to assert your rights.
And, if you haven't already done so, get your union leadership involved.
Another perspective: when you share concerns, it may ‘step on toes’ or ‘hit a nerve’, which will cause both sides to react differently. Continue to share, respectfully and with proof/knowledge of the concerns.
Of course
Oh my!! Such an unfortunate situation. Let me explain how I like to hear challenges that do not make ME feel attacked or exposed. But rather, Ms. Principal, I like the way … Will there be an opportunity to share with you an idea I have about improving the look of..?
Here goes:
“Ms. Principal, I like the way we have the car rider lines labeled for our students. I have an idea for us to consider speeding up the bus onboarding line like it’s already working for the car rider line. When would be a convenient 5 minutes to share an idea with you?”
Instead, DON’T say…”I have a concern with how the kids are being dismissed for buses. It’s crazy out there!! Someone could get hurt. What are we going to do about the Susie-who-broke-her-foot situation? Do we have a plan to avoid another incident? “
THAT WOULD SOUND like a lot of blame and a lot of change for 1 isolated- but valid- incident.
Word choice matters.
Timing is important.
Environment is equally important as word choice.
Never use WE- means you’ve been talking behind someone’s back. Use I or My.
Are you doing this in front of everyone to expose weaknesses? Or do you have a valid idea and want the best outcome with the person with the most power to make positive change? ❤️
Yes. I have had my hand slapped, so to speak, multiple times for respectfully sharing ideas or concerns. Unfortunately, I work in a place where decisions are made from the top, we are told what to do, invited to share feedback, but then condescendingly told that our concerns are not valid. I have learned that the “right” answer is to fly under the radar, solve problems amongst ourselves as a team, and to watch out who we speak to, when, and where because there are very few people to trust. Admin has favorites, and they have moles, too. It is not a good culture. I have been there too long to leave, so my teammates and I make the best of it. We work together, celebrate our small victories, and focus on the students.
I've totally seen it happen in my school too, where teachers hesitate to speak up for fear of being treated differently. I hate to admit it, but that's why I rarely voice concerns. It's so tough when you want to advocate for yourself and your students but feel like you’re walking on eggshells.
It’s hard when you want to improve things but worry about the fallout. I’ve learned to pick my battles carefully, but it’s tough when even reasonable concerns are met with defensiveness.
And the target on your back will grow.. simply by asking questions about the ENVIRONMENT of our STUDENTS!
Unfortunately, been there done that. Document everything. And continue to fight the good fight. “Illigetimi non carborundum” which roughly translates “don’t let the bastards wear you down.” The good news is that admin rotates frequently. The bad news is you don’t necessarily escape the situation if they get an internal promotion.
You can always treat your admin with respect while you push them to see their decisions and actions from the teachers and the students perspective. Most of them have been out of the classroom for so long, and bogged down with their duties (parents, discipline, lawsuits, testing) they have lost sight of who they serve. Remind them.
went through the same thing with a new principal, she ran 30-40 teachers out of the building in her first year, she was fired after 3 years
