It starts (very gently) at 40, and just gets worse from there. I’d say by 55-60 you’re almost unhireable for a lot of roles, especially lower level stuff.

That's right. If you are a VP you're fine for awhile, but lower roles become extremely competitive.
I don't know that there is a certain age. Part of me thinks it might depend on how old you look. I am in my 50's but look 30 so I haven't run into any issues yet.

On the flip side, I got hired at 50 while bald and bloated from chemo. But it was internal, and the hiring manager knew me.
Some argue it never stops. You are young and inexperienced or old and no longer productive. I definitely wouldn’t want to do too much job hopping, regardless of my age, right now.

I think the exception is upward mobility in your current organization. Especially for men. There seems to be no end to promotions for a certain type at my org.
I’m in the same situation. I’m 60 and recently let go from my job.
I’ve been applying for job I’m qualified for. Just to be to told “all though I have the experience, we have decided to move forward with meeting with meeting other candidates.” Yeah my age I’m sure had a lot to do with it. The last time I had to look for a job I was 46. It took me 15 months to find a job. Don’t give up. Keep trying, keep applying and believe in yourself. Good luck to you.

Good luck to you. I'm also 60 and if I get let go I'm just gonna hang it up. Ramp up my side gig and turn on my pension. I know I'm lucky to be in that position.
I believe the industry prefers the older candidates ( Gen X ) that have the knowledge, the work ethic and experience in some roles, I see too often, this new generation taking on jobs and barely doing enough work to even get paid for, I know because I have cleaned up their files.
How can you pay and close an entire claim with out one file note? The only thing in the file was on the payment screen.
Don't count your self out. Highlight your knowledge and work ethic on your resume and go after the jobs you want.
If you get into politics, you have a lifetime ahead of you

Isn't that the truth! It is nice to see the younger folks jumping in though.
I'm 56 and i believe I am marked with the scarlet letter and considered unhirable in my field.
I’m 46 and just landed a new role that I start tomorrow.
If you have the right experience you have an equal chance at getting the job, You have to have the right job skills but unfortunately you most likely have to be perfectly fitted for the job with all required skills whereas if they hire a younger person, they will probably be more willing to train them. The people interviewing you will often be younger than you and most likely will have concepts about "older" workers.
Its hard to explain to a 20 year old 20 years in the industry.
I am 53 and started a new position in an insurance company in July. With this economy I don’t think many people will be able to retire between 60 to 70 at this rate..

Totally depends on whether you've been saving, because the stock market has been on a helluva roll lately!
