It's a bummer that human rights considerations keep derailing your attempts to avoid state income tax.

Let's keep politics out of posts that explicitly ask for no political discussion, please.
I’m one of many voices:
Pros - same work for greater pay than in other major markets (taking into account lower taxes here), afford a house as a junior associate, tremendous food scene and diversity in large cities (especially Houston), exit options in-house, particularly in energy, manufacturing, and health care
Cons - humidity and weather (including hurricane risk), politics (for those that feel strongly about being in a blue state), high property tax for those with McMansions

The property tax convo is a little misleading. My CA friends pay higher property tax bc their home values are so much greater. You'll pay more in property tax elsewhere, but a higher percentage in Texas. But the percentage doesn't really matter?
On my $1m house, I pay $10k in property tax per year. But my house would be $2-$3m in LA, and I'd probably pay like $15k or something there.

Pros: Lower CoL, we don't work as long of hours and make more money as associates (bc we are taxed less), smaller legal community that really feels like more of a community, easier to travel to the best national parks and central America and Mexico, more opportunities to be in nature, for you you'd have more political comraderie and wouldn't have to feel like a pariah for your beliefs.
Cons: worse food (except Houston), miserable summers (but great winters imo), probably less income as partner, probably fewer cool exit ops
