It’s maybe a little more difficult for us than other personalities (e.g., ENTJ) but I think it’s actually highly beneficial to be an ENFP in more senior roles because of our relationship abilities. That being said, we do have some specific challenges, including:
1) it can be more difficult to be taken seriously because we sometimes come across as having less “gravitas” and are sometimes less assertive/aggressive than other types;
2) we sometimes struggle to prioritize, stay organized, and see things through; and,
3) we sometimes struggle to move up the ranks because the lower tenure roles require more focus on details, doing boring analytics, etc. which can be really draining and demotivating
spot on
mainly interested in seeing how other ppl cope outside the firm and share learning tips and encouragement we are the Unicorns of consulting!
how do we overcome these things? any tips? particularly 1) and 3) I'm working very hard on!
1) I think it’s important to believe in yourself, which helps you improve your confidence and presentation. It’s taken me many years to realize this and truly believe it, but you know much more than you realize and your colleagues know much less than they appear to, and you got hired at your company because you’re smart and capable and therefore your opinions matter. I used to (and still often do) caveat everything I say and would minimize my ideas because I simultaneously wanted people to like me / not think me arrogant and I genuinely wasn’t sure if what I was saying was right. Also, learn that there are situations where being more serious/“somber” is warranted and situations where being bubbly is more helpful (makes you seem likable/non-threatening), so be thoughtful about when you choose to use each demeanor.
3) It’s all about the people for me. Even if I have to do a boring, crappy analysis or something, I find ways to spice up my day. Whether it’s telling jokes in the team room, getting everyone to take a short lunch break together, or playing music in the team room, I find ways to make the day itself fun and then the time passes more quickly and those little breaks make the work more bearable. I’ve gotten to where I care less about what I’m working on and most about who I’m working with. Doesn’t matter if it’s the most interesting/exciting work ever if I’m working alone or if the team has no fun.
