#1 is so common that I’ve turned it into a game.
E.g. one job posting mentioned an office dog to describe the culture. At the interview I said I loved that. The hiring manager had no idea what I was talking about. “We don’t have a dog!”
It pays to remember a few things about corporate culture. This is just observational, I've spent most of my life behind a counter. But in dealing with hiring managers and above just never forget they got there by standing on someone else.
Sometimes it was a gentle step. Sometimes it was a stomp. But very few people get to that level by being forthright in every interaction. Integrity can and does exist within malice.
It's amazing to me how some fail upward. Some of it was nepotism, some of it was just pure savagery. You can tell who they are by how well they know the job (or not) or how they treat those under them. There are many good managers who know the job inside and out, as well as off the book knowledge. Then there's the managers are there because of them playing the game, who they know, or who they're related to...which in the end could be detrimental to the organization.
Asking about #2 should be a red flag for the entire interviewer.
I had one interview where they treated it like certification test. “What are the two ways to…” Dude, what’s the problem the company is facing? Google for those answers or ask ChatGPT yourself or you can watch me do it like every other adult in the world. Let’s discuss the context of what you are trying to do and why.
I recently went for an interview where the manager seemed so checked out never really showing any interest in my conversation. I wondered why even bothering to ask for an interview? She also changed the position of interest from day shift to night shift. I really thought there was a position to fill. So disappointed I guess she had to meet a quota for interviews.

You cannot win!
I’ve had number 1 happen this year, I ignored it and took the job. I quit 2 weeks later.
Wait a minute: I thought we’re supposed to believe that all employers are legitimate and responsible? After all, employers give each other a carte blanche pass of legitimacy when calling for references. Or that all separations are done legitimately by these employers and the former employees are suspect?
FAT CHANCE on the legitimacy of the previous employer separation thing being done in all fairness. I think they are all in cahoots !
Man o man have I ever ! Been a victim of this DRAWN OUT PROCESS thing. They keep putting me off, delays, delays, delays. What does this mean, really?
